Goth Style Clothing Inspiration

The term “Goth” can be dated back to the Renaissance era and was used to describe a certain subset of art and architecture, such as those that included Gargoyles or depictions of hell.

As such, these forms of art was considered unattractive and shunned upon. Later in the 18th century, the term became used when referencing elements of horror in literature.

What is Goth Style?
Today, though, Goth is almost unanimously referred as a sense of fashion that deviates from the norm with heavy emphasis on dark colors to bring about a sense of melancholy and morbid appearance. Often, people who adopt Goth fashion are often stereotyped as outcasts, rebels, or as the “uncool kids.” However, Gothic fashion is actually a form of self-expression and embracing the opposite of what society has defined as hip or trendy.

For those that want to know how to dress Goth and embrace every meaning of the term, know that there are no rules or fashion faux pas since the style is all about being you. With that being said, though, Goth culture and fashion can be divided into two divisions: old-style and modern Goth.

Old School Goth
Old style Goth became prominent during the 1980s and 90s among fans of the rock & roll and punk music genre. People began adopting the style of dress, which often consisted of dressing from head-to-toe in dark-colored clothing. This may include black boots, trench coats, frayed jackets, ripped skinny jeans, torn stockings, and clothing with a lot of metal buckles and straps. It also includes accessories like spiked neck collars, black nail polish, and fingerless gloves.

To get a better idea of popular Goth styles, think of notable Hollywood characters, such as Christina Ricci’s Wednesday Addams from the Addams Family, or Winona Ryder’s character from Beetlejuice.

Some may also opt for a more attention-grabbing appearance by donning white face paint, black lipstick, and heavy eyeliner. Marilyn Manson is a classic example of someone who has embraced this form of Goth.

Furthermore, old Goth may also adopt elements from medieval culture. For men, aim for loose trousers and pirate-styled shirts. Women should aim for long flowing skirts combined with a bodice or corset worn outwardly. While this is not an accurate depiction of actual medieval fashion, medieval Goth is more about embracing the fantasy elements of the West’s romanticizing of the middle ages.

Modern Goth Fashion
There is also contemporary Goth style clothing. Keep in mind that the difference between old and new Goth isn’t always distinguishable, and there are grey areas. In any case, Goth is Goth, so don’t get too caught up in how the two differ. In learning how to dress Goth, you will likely find that the right style for you falls somewhere in between.

However, modern Goth for the most part may combine old Goth culture with fashion that would normally be deemed the opposite of what Goth is. Take Japan’s Lolita and kawaii culture for instance. These styles often involve overly cutesy clothing that makes heavy use of accessories like umbrellas, bonnets, bow ties, and a lot of pink and bright colors.
Despite Goth and kawaii fashion seemingly being polar opposites, much inspiration can be drawn by combining the two styles into one. This may include dark-colored Lolita and kawaii clothing. In place of Hello Kitty or other cutesy accessories, use ones containing images of skulls, coffins, or zombies. Some people may even just wear normal clothing and give it a Gothic element.

Adopt Your Own Goth Style
If you want to learn how to dress Goth, just look up a few images online for inspiration and go from there. In the beginning, there will be a lot of experimenting. Ultimately, you will find the right combination of Goth style clothing that you can confidently wear as a statement of your personality.

Electronic Summer 2014 in Gothenburg

So who is going?
We are seriously considering about it but we haven't decided yet due to work obligations and since we don't live in Gothenburg. It's not that far from where we live but still it's a distance/cost we need to consider.

Gothic style tips for men - August 2014

Hello my dear darklings. It's August, which means that it's summer in half the planet. So, how do you dress in a uber cool gothic style when it's that warm outside? Lucky for me and I guess for many that live in the nothern parts of Europe it's not that warm so we don't suffer from our gothic outfits.

However I'm going to show you how to rock the style and remain cool and this post is dedicated to men. Only men's fashion on this one!

Pants.
This is a great example of short pants that match well a goth/emo/ebm/metal outfit.
You can find it here
Or what abou something like that?

You can find it here.

Tops.
This awesome T-shirt is very summery don't you agree? Feeling hot from the heat? Jump in and have a refreshing bloody bath with the companion of your choice.
You can find it here.

Or this one if you want to look more formal:
You can find it here.
Are you a Depeche Mode fan? Worry not. This shirt is for you!
You  can find it here

Do you like sculls? Then this is the shirt for you. It always crack me up when people are asking me with fear in their face "Why on earth do you wear sculls on you? Why do you like them?" Well I answer them, why do you like flowers? I mean we all are going to end up like that in the end, I mean skeletons, so there is nothing to fear, right? Right :)
You can find it here.

Regarding shoes, since it's summer I will let you get away with simple trainers, black please, because I understand how tough it is to walk with heavy boots. Or why not a pair of black all-stars?

Found on Pinterest

Now you are all set! No excuses for not rocking a goth style even during summer!
Enjoy my darklings.

Post apocalyptic style

I have watched too many post apocalyptic movies and and I'm a huge fan of this genre.

Some of the movies I have seen and really love are:

  • Equilibrium,
  • Matrix (of course)
  • Book of Eli
  • Mad Max (THE most post apocalyptic film, imho)
  • The Postman
  • Hunger games

and many many more that I can't remember right now.

Besides a good plot, I love me some dystopian/post-apocalyptic fashion.

I'm actually looking to find something of that style without being torn apart which is not easy because that's the point of that fashion. It should look torn and worn out in a futuristic kind of way. But until I find what I want, I decided to take a look at the my lovely Pinterest which, once again, did not let me down.

For all of you post apocalyptic fans, here is a board for you.
I intend on building my own soon, but until then enjoy this one!

Back from holidays and the weather is so goth

Hello all. I was away on summer holidays in Greece where I got a lot of sun (so un-goth I know) and I did a lot of snorkeling which I loved, saw my friends and family etc., and in general I had a great time.

I got almost sunburned the first week because I have a very fair skin and I used a 20 sunscreen only, which was not a good idea, so then I got a 50+ and my skin was saved. C'mon give me some goth points for that :)

Anyway, I want to share my short clothing tip of the summer with you, especially for you that thinking of traveling in a very warm country like Greece for your holidays. I'm from Athens and I know how impossibly hot it gets there so I wanted to find something elegant, goth and light, to help me look nice during my time there. I knew I wanted a dress of some sort and... yes I found it.

This is an amazing dress from the Sweden rock e-shop and you can find it here: http://www.swedenrock-online.se/innocent-khorion-klaenning/art_247589/
I'm not affiliated in any way with this store. I just wanted to say that it was exactly what I needed. I was wearing it almost every day (yes yes washing it often of course) paired with my Dr.Marten boots. It is comfy, light and goth!
Perfect for darklings who want to travel to hot summer destinations!

You don't need to get the exact dress of course, but my advice is to look for something in that direction. Looks great as is or you can also match it with a pair of black leggings (short or long ones).

Enjoy your summer style and stay goth!

Gothic nails style

Well you can call it whatever you like. It's with no doubt a dark style and sometimes I call it gothic somethings EBM or Industrial, since I'm more of an EBM kind of girl.

Since my semi-permanent manicure I did a few weeks ago reached its final days it was high time I did something about it. So off with the old, in with the new. This time I decided to go for my classic black nail polish but with a little twist.

I'm using a Maybelline Color Show nail polish called Blackout and here is a picture of it:

And then I used this glittery stripes nail polish from Isadora, N.863

Both of them here:

So first I applied the black nail polish and after a few minutes, when it dried, I applied the glittery-stripes Isadora (I don't know if there is a better word for it, but it's glittery and they are stripes so there you have it :) ).

And here is the result. Cool yes?

Since I'm not a nails professional please pardon my amateur-manicure but I hope you like it and that it gives you some inspiration.

Experiment my friends and stay cool, stay goth!

Well, well, well, look what arrived in my inbox today. Vampire freak is having a spring sale. ^_^

Just click and enjoy. I know I am.

Here are some items that are well on their way into my shopping cart.

http://store.vampirefreaks.com/product.php?pid=6584&r=xanthi
Not a sales item but still adorable.

Omg, this one is so cute and perfect for the corporate goth in me :) Ideal for my meeting days.

And I know I seriously need a cool pair of pants and Tripp is my favourite brand, so I'm seriously thinking of buying this one.

(Note to self: Get on a diet. Not a starving one, just reduce the junk food a bit and get out and walk!!)

I know I know I should just do it. But having just started playing Elder scrolls online, and along with today's bad weather, training or just go out for a walk in the amazing nature is not the first thing on my mind.
That being said, I should just get on finishing my order and get back to my game :)

I'm working and I have a random goth/ebm radio station playing on Spotify (based on the music I like) and now this song came on and it so reminded me of my younger years when I was an innocent little bat :)
It's romantic in a sense.

Enjoy!

How I spent my weekend? With my Gothic Beauty Magazine!

What's best that enjoying a dark weekend, being home at your sofa or bed with a glass of red wine and your favourite magazine in hands? Yup, that's what I did!

I admit that I have been a bit lazy with my magazines and it's been a while since I last bought one so I decided it was time I catch up!

I'm not good on reviews and this is not a review blog but I really want to describe how everything went.

As you see on the picture above, I ordered my Gothic Beauty magazine (but I went for issue 41) and I decided to go for the digital version. I own a tablet nowadays so I said why not? I didn't even hesitate.

The ordering procedure was smooth. It didn't feel automatic so it must be processed manually. Yay for personal customer service. After a few hours of me placing the order I recieved the instructions and the neccessary links.

It was very easy. You need to download the Magzter application (available in android, ios and windows phone) and from there you need to login with your username and the password the Magazine sends you.

So, you download and open the application, login as explained on the email and then you click on the three lines on top and left of the screen. there you see your "purchases" and once you click it you'll see the latest GothicBeauty Magazine cover (at the time of this post issue 43 was the latest as you can see on the link). Click on it and give it a moment to load all the previous issues. The one you purchased will be available to read now.

I decided to buy issue 41 because I wanted to read the Front Line Assembly interview :)

So this is how I spent this weekend :)

It's been a while since I read a goth related magazine and I sure did miss the feeling. However, I know that for my summer holidays I will get the printed version. I wouldn't want my lovely tablet to get sand inside it.

So how did you spent your weekend? And most of all, do you have any digital or printed magazines of choice? Or feeds?

Be well and stay goth!
X.

Gothic style tips for men - Classic 80s Gothic style

I know that I write mostly about me and my girly stuff (aka gothic style tips for girls) and it's been a long since since I last made a men's dedicate post, so here it is.

This post is going to be dedicated to men only and I will offer a few suggestions on how to dress with a gothic style, especially if you are an 80s goth person (think Sisters of Mercy here or Siouxsie).

Top
Well, that's kind of easy. Any simple black T-shirt or shirt, plain preferably, will work just fine. However, look what I found for you to wear on top of that. What can go better than a Siouxsie jacket?
You can find it on VampireFreaks here:

Bottoms
So what about pants? Worry not, I'll show you what to wear. Well, you can always go for your black pair of pants, but the trend in the 80s goth was (and still is for the true fans of that period) tight or skinny pants.
Something like that:
You can find this pair of tight black jeans here.

And who says you cannot wear them elsewhere? But admit it. It is the best choice for a classic goth club night out. Well for any goth club night out actually.

Shoes
Last but not least, we have the shoes. From what I mostly see from my fellow 80s gothers (yes my word) that's the kind of shoes they like. The pointier the better :)

But of course your Dr.Martens are also a perfect much, as well as any boots, but avoid the New Rock style. Not that I don't like them, I love New Rock boots, but they go with a more modern gothic outfit. If you want to keep it simple and classic (80s), modern boots are a no-no.

However, the most important accessory you would need is your attitude :).

Take a lesson from the best in the field, mr. Andrew Eldritch. I mean, can you beat that?

So there you go. You ready for your big night out, hitting the goth clubs. I hope you enjoyed my tips. Feel free to email me if you have any requests at xanthi[@]gothicfashion.se. I will do my best to help you and I will dedicate a post only to you!

Stay goth.

Grown up goth to die for

I don't know about you, but I seriously love this one.

And it's an amazing casual, work acceptable, grown-up goth outfit. Well ok, depending on where you work but I guess in most places it should be fine. If you cannot wear it at work, consider a style like this for doing chores in the city and meet your friends later for a coffee or drink to catch up.

Comfy, stylish and "dark" :)

Beautiful elegant goth dress for fancy events

Isn't this a very elegant dress suitable to wear in fancy events like weddings (yes black dress on a wedding is perfectly acceptable) or any sort of events that require black tie dress code.

BTW, this is from my Pinterest boards.
Here is my Goth inspired board and here is my Black fashion board. You can say that the latter is my "grown-up goth" board ;)

Little miss Gothic Fashion is back!

I know it's not the world's most important event but I'm back home in Sweden and it feels sooo good.

I was in Greece, in Athens, for two weeks visiting relatives and taking care of some paper stuff business. Boring stuff with the greek authorities but they need to be done.

I am ashamed of myself for not going to not even one goth club during these two weeks. In my defence there weren't any descent events - or none that I was aware of - so I don't feel that guilty :).

So, as I said, I'm back home (funny I use the word home for Sweden now, but it really feels like that. I've been living here for 5 years and it has been amazing so far) and I'm catching up with my work.

I didn't stop working during my time away so it's not much catching up, but it's different sitting in my own desk, in peace and quiet, without the constant interruptions. Athens is a big chaotic city (which I love) and interruptions are unavoidable.

However, I did manage to visit the beauty salon and treat myself with a hair styling (a simple one) and a semi-permanent manicure.

Here are some pictures of me treating myself :)
This is the only white shirt I own. It features a huge cross and skull in the front though. And it also shows my tattoo hihi /myposerself. And you can also see my skulls scarf on the bench.

And thats me from the other side.
This is my semi-permanent manicure. It's the first time I did it and I really liked the procedure. Unfortunatelly they didn't have any really gothic colours ( no black ) and so I decided to try out a combination of white and dark burgundy. I do like the "reverted french manicure" style and I will be on the lookout for black/red combination.

This is it for my small update.  More things to come soon so stay tuned and stay Goth!

In a different country

Yes I like the darkness and the goth culture but right now I'm so happy that I'm in my sunny home country (Greece) for a few days.

I haven't realized it untill I moved to Sweden that I (well "we" I guess) need the sun. It's vitamin D, our body needs it.

Today was my first day in Athens since New Years and I had a few things to take care. I had to go to the bank etc, so I wanted to be somewhat well dressed.

Of course in black. Always in black. So the outfit of the day was the following:

My dr.Martens, my black pair of jeans, my cool black with red stars belt, my black shirt (3/4 sleeves length) and in general it was a grown-up, casual, toned down goth outfit.

Here is my belt and my jeans (yes I'm using the same picture from my previous post :) )
And these are my Martens boots

And on top I was wearing my beautiful Mango black trench coat. It was one of the few days that I looked nice, a nice young lady :P

Now I'm in the family house, chilling in the sofa watching TV. It's a slow day today but I have many days ahead of me. I'm hoping for a nice goth clubbing night. I'll definatelly post some pictures if that happens.

I wish I weren't that tired and I could write more but it's time for me to go to bed.

Stay goth everyone!

When and how I wear my favourite Gothic style t-shirts

I have a bunch of goth t-shirts that I often wear when I'm not in a meeting with my customers.

Even though people in Sweden are very open minded and they tend to judge you for our skills and not for your appearance, still I prefer to dress more "professionally" when I meet with them, simply because I like it.

(Yes it's black and it involves a nice black shirt and some subtle goth accessories but I'll write another post about that)

Now, when it comes to t-shirts, I chose to wear them as often as possible because they are comfy and because it shows who I am.

Being a freelancer means that I'm flexible with my schedule, but I do keep it between normal business hours since my customers are working at these hours. However, I'm also flexible when it comes to where I work.

I work from home mostly but I often take my laptop and go to the local coffee shop. There is no dress code in coffee shops. Casual or smart dressed, anything goes. And I choose often casual because I want to be comfy when I'm messing with codes or numbers :)

But enough of that.

I want to share with you my fav T-shirts and tops and some simple styling tips (for girls this time).
It's not anything fancy at this time but I'll come back with more stuff ;)

The first is my Rammstein T-shirt which was a present from my amazing boyfriend. (The floor is extremely clean so don't worry about it). I usually wear it with my black jeans and this cool belt.
Easy casual daily goth/ebm/alternative style, don't you agree?

The following is my Emily strange T-shirt. It says Wizard of Odd and I usually wear it with this palestinian scarf along with the same belt as above and my jeans or black skirt.

This is my Gothic Beauty magazine t-shirt. It was a gift from a friend and it has a special place in my heart :). Unfortunately I took a selfie with my camera and even though I adore my Nexus 5, it's front camera is crappy.

And me wearing it (the selfie I mentioned above)

In conclusion, when I want to stay goth but in a casual, simple style, I use my accessories to express my style.
For instance, today I'm wearing a simple black T-shirt, my black jeans and this cool belt with red stars.

I leave you with my simple tips for today and I'll back soon with more :)
Stay goth.
X.
